The African Union (AU) Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security African Union, in collaboration with Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the National Youth Council Friday, November 5th concluded a 5-day trainers’ training on Citizen Election Observation.
Forty young people from the Regional Youth Committees and national youth organizations benefited from the training conducted by international experts on Citizen Election Observation.
The training aimed to equip participants with the required knowledge to become international trainers on election observation, as well provide them with the opportunity to observe elections within the sub-region.
In his closing remarks, Honorable Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Bakary Y. Badjie, expressed gratitude for the timely conduct of the training, saying, it came at a right time when Gambia is approaching election.
He extended appreciation to the African Union Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security for training the young people of The Gambia on such a crucial and timely course.
He used the opportunity to urge the trainees to utilize the knowledge gained especially during the upcoming electoral cycle and assured the young people of The Gambia government’s commitment to free and fair elections.
Participants were taken through political and historical context of the presidential elections in The Gambia, normative framework (benchmarks for credible elections) and the constitutional and legal framework for the elections in The Gambia, as well as highlights of key electoral processes and election preparedness by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
