Sports For Health

The Government of The Republic of The Gambia through the dynamic and able leadership of his Excellency, Sheikh Professor Alhagie Yahya AJJ Jammeh, is highly committed and steadfast in ensuring that sport is central in its National Development Goals and Objectives.

Against this backdrop, the Ministry Of Youth And Sports in collaboration with the Ministry Health Social Welfare deem it fit to organize sports for health programme for the Executive, Legislative, Judiciary, Politician’s Business Committees, Ngo’s, Parastatal, UN Family and Civil Service to encourage all to be engage in sports for fitness and good health to ensure a healthier and wealthier nation.

1st edition of sports for health was held at the (July 22nd square) in Banjul from 23rd - 24th June 2012, with the following institutions

· Civil service

· Executive

· Legislative

· Judiciary

The 2nd edition was also held at the Serre Kunda West Mini-Stadium from 9th – 10th March 2013, with the following institution

· Civil service

· Executive

· Legislative

· Judiciary

· Business committees

· Politicians

· UN family


· Parastatals

· Combined Service

The 3rd edition is proposed to take place from 7th -9th March 2014 at July 22 square in Banjul, we expecting more than ten institutions

Using sports as a tool to promote fitness, wellbeing, interaction and good health.

Using sports as a tool to promote and encourage team work, team building and esprit de corps.

Using this programme as an avenue to select a formidable government team compete in various sports against the private sector, Business Community and Civil society to foster more unity and co-operation among these sectors.

The sports for health programme for 2014 is organized by the Ministry of Youth & Sports in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Social Welfare.


To make those who are not active in sports to practice it for their well being;

To know the importance of sports in building healthy mine in a healthy body;

To inculcate discipline in work places through sports;

To build peace and harmony within the work force;

To create awareness on the importance of blood testing in the well being of the people.
