Sports, Interior Ministers Reaffirm Govt’s Support to Develop Female Football

The ministers of Youth and Sports, Hon. Alieu K Jammeh and the Interior, Hon. Ousman Sonko, have both reaffirmed government’s support to develop women’s sports particularly football in the country. The duo was speaking at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium where the national female champions Interior Football Club played to a 1-1 stalemate with Bissau Guinean champions Mavegro last Saturday.

Youth migration by all means cannot continue unchecked

The minister of Youth and Sports has said that the current trend of youth migration by all means and through any route cannot continue un checked. Alieu K Jammeh was speaking last Wednesday during the inauguration of the new council members of the National Youth Council (NYC) at the premises of the President’s International Award. The new members would serve as the governance arm of the council as provided for in the National Youth Council Act 2000.

International Youth Day celebrated

The National Youth Council in collaboration with stakeholders on Wednesday joined the rest of the world to celebrate International Youth Day on the theme ‘Youth civic engagement’ at a ceremony held at the Samega Janneh Hall, Serekunda East.

It should be noted that this ministry has under its purview, implementing agencies such as, the Department of Youth and Sports (DYS), the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSS), President’s International Award (PIA), National Youth Council (NYC), National Sports Council (NSC), National Enterprise Development Initiative (NEDI) and the Independence Stadium and Friendship Hostel. The Gambia’s youth constitute over 50% of the population which necessitates the need for their effective mainstreaming and assuming center of focus to drive socio-economic change and national development.
